The Department of Religion and Philosophy offers a major and minor in Religion, and a major and minor in Philosophy
What is Philosophy?
The word 'philosophy' comes from the Greek words 'philia', which means friend or love, and 'sophia', which means wisdom. Philosophers seek wisdom by asking fundamental questions about what there is (metaphysics), what we can know (epistemology), what kinds of people we should be (ethics), what is beauty (aesthetics), and how we should reason (logic). A major in philosophy will help students to develop their critical reading and writing skills, so that they are better equipped to offer intelligent responses to some of life's most difficult questions.
What is Religion?
Anyone wishing to understand more of what life is about will find the study of religion rewarding. The academic study of religion involves looking at religious beliefs and practices in a careful, analytic, and objective manner. It requires that one study other religious traditions in their own contexts. The academic study of religion neither expects nor requires that students be believers in any religion, but rather that they have a desire to understand this powerful aspect of human life more fully.
We are offering 2 new courses for 2008 - Philosophy of Art and The Ethics of War.
