Sport Management Major

The Sport Management program at Otterbein College was granted special distinction by receiving national approval/accreditation from the NASSM-NASPE (North American Society for Sport Management-National Association for Sport and Physical Education) Sport Management Program Review Council. In addition to now having one of the top sport management programs in North America, the program provides the academic "rigor" and innovative curriculum that will allow students to meet the contemporary needs of the sport industry.  Otterbein College's sport managment program has been reviewed and analyzed according to 10 core content areas in sport: behavioral dimensions, management and organizations skills, ethics, legal aspects, marketing, communication, finance, economics, governance, and internship experience. These core content areas are aimed at providing students with the knowledge and practical experiences necessary for pursuing a career in sport management.

Successful careers in many areas of the sport industry include, but are not limited to: school and community athletic and recreational administration, administration of professional sports teams; sport agencies and law; sports information and media; sport promotions and marketing, sport sales; sport facility and arena management; and special event planning.

Otterbein provides students with a strong liberal arts education and extensive training in the field of sport management. In addition to the sport management specific courses, the sport management major requires foundational courses from accounting, business administration, economics, communication, math and computer science. An interdisciplinary knowledge base with the practical application of that knowledge through field experiences, internships, classroom activities, and case studies are emphasized. Required in this major is an internship in an approved setting supervised by a specialist in the field.

Recommended minors for Sport Management majors are Business Administration (Marketing, Management or Finance), Accounting, Public Relations, Broadcasting, Coaching, Journalism, Physical Education, Legal Studies, Psychology, or Organizational Communication.
