Planned Giving
Faculty endowments foster faculty development in teaching, scholarship, and continued growth in their field.
Life insurance policy: Make Otterbein College the owner and beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. Premiums, plus any cash value of an existing policy at the time of transfer to Otterbein, generally are tax deductible. Charitable Gift Annuity: You make a gift of cash or securities to Otterbein, and we in turn provide you with a guaranteed annuity for life, regardless of fluctuations in the economy or stock market. The amount of the annuity is determined by the size of the gift, and your age at the time the gift is made. Tax deductions also are determined by the donor's age, and annuity payments are taxed at a more favorable rate than dividend or other types of income. Trusts: There are many types of trusts. Typically, assets are transferred to a trust, and responsibility for managing the assets passes to the trustee. Gains on the assets are not taxed when they are put into a trust, and you can direct to whom, for how long, and in what amount (percentage of income or fixed) payments from the trust will be made. Trusts can remain in effect in perpetuity, or the assets eventually can be transferred to a beneficiary. Trust arrangements are private, and are not subject to the delay of probate. Will or Bequest: An outright gift of cash or other assets to Otterbein in your will. There are no predeceased tax benefits for the donor, and probating the will can cause a delay in the distribution of the gift. Otterbein receives the gift free and clear, to be used as you have directed. Bequests can be made for specific amounts, a stated percentage of your estate, for a percentage or the total residual of the estate after other terms of the will have been satisfied, contingent upon certain criteria, such as whether you outlive your primary beneficiaries, or restricted for a specific purpose or program.
