The only obligation to which. . . we may hold a novel. . . is that it be interesting. By Henry James

English Major with Literary Studies Concentration

The literature studies concentration begins with Words and Forms: An Introduction to the Literary Imagination (155), moves through courses in interpretation, theory, British and American literature, and non-canonical literatures (e.g., Native American, African American, women writers), and ends with a Senior Seminar providing advanced, in-depth study of authors, periods, or themes. Both literary studies and creative writing students compile a Senior Portfolio of writing done in the major with a cover essay reflecting on their own development as readers and writers. The requirements are listed below for students who entered Otterbein in Fall of 2001 or later. Students entering before 2001 should check their catalog.
