Welcome to the Center for Community Engagement!

Otterbein College's Center for Community Engagement (CCE) builds community partnerships and enhances our historical relationships with neighboring communities. The CCE brings together campus volunteerism, service-learning, and community-based action research. During the 2007-08 school year, 83 service-learning courses enrolled over 1,300 students. Students, faculty, and staff currently support community engagement in five key areas:

At last year's Fall Safety Expo, students learned knife safety as they carved their own pumpkins.SAFETY EXPO TO OFFER TIPS TO STUDENTS
Emergency response vehicles and pumpkin carving included among festivities

Otterbein College will celebrate Make-A-Difference Day with a Fall Safety Expo that will explore a variety of important safety topics, including fire safety, the potential danger of strangers, disaster planning and knife safety, on Friday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The CCE will donate painted dog houses to a local humane society
CCE OFFERS SERVICE OPPORTUNITY AT HOMECOMING

During Otterbein's Homecoming Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 18, the CCE sponsored its annual "stop-n-serve" booth in order to benefit a local humane shelter. During this time, friends and family members of Otterbein helped build and paint dog houses. The Center received numerous comments from people who enjoyed the service opportunity.

Additionally, The CCE participated in the the annual Homecoming Parade, where they received first runner-up for their float entry. The theme of the float was "Spunky: Service Through the Ages" featuring various Spunky the Cardinals from 1847 through 2008. Mascots from various local non-profit agencies were on hand to promote awareness for recycling and environment preservation.

Volunteers help paint at a local elementary school.Otterbein freshmen serve Columbus area during Fall Plunge

On September 13, nearly 200 Otterbein College students and staff, most of whom were new freshmen, participated in the 16th Annual Fall Community Service Plunge. To begin the day, students discussed real-world crises, including hunger, homelessness, literacy and poverty. Following the opening programming session, students loaded buses to travel to 18 various community agencies, such as the Girl Scouts of America, Concord Counseling Services, two public libraries, St. Vincent's Family Center and many others.

At St. Vincent's Family Center, for example, Otterbein volunteers baked cookies with the residents of their facility. Students said they had a great time at this site, along with the many other locations. The 2008 Fall Plunge was a great success and the Center for Community Engagement looks forward to sponsoring many more in the future.

MWD Mike and MWD Aris watch over care packages sent bt Otterbein"Operation Otterbein" Care Packages Received in Iraq

SGT Prindle and SGT Colon, part of the K-9 unit stationed at Camp Bucca in Iraq, sent thank-you letters to the students and staff and everyone who supported Operation Otterbein. Their Military Working Dogs (MWDs) Aris and Mike are thankful for the dog biscuits and treats, as well! Follow the link to "Operation Otterbein" to read the full letters and learn more about the project, which aims to serve troops fighting overseas with letters, supplies and care packages.

President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Otterbein receives Presidential Award for Exemplary Community Service

Otterbein College was one of three schools to receive Presidential Awards for General Community Service in the second annual 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In 2006, Otterbein was one of 13 finalists for the Honor Roll.
